Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does a typical session look like?
Sessions with me can be broadly broken down into two types 1: Assessment and Formulation 2: Treatment Assessment and Formulation - A typical assessment session offers you the opportunity to tell your story and explain what has brought you to therapy. You may also be asked to complete some questionnaires in preparation for our first session. The aim of the assessment is for us to step back and examine the problem in detail so we develop a joint understanding (formulation) of why you feel the way you do. This knowledge and framework will act like a road map and indicate what we might need to cover in treatment sessions. By making sense of your difficulties this can help you make changes that can lead to a more fulfilling and meaningful life. Treatment – A treatment session usually has a beginning, middle and end. At the beginning of the session you will be greeted, offered a drink and we can both decide how it would be most helpful to use our time. Whilst I will always bring my own ideas, it is important to remember that you are the expert in your life story. Becoming an active participant in the therapy process and bringing your own ideas of what you want to get out of sessions has been shown to lead to better overall outcomes for people. The main content of a treatment session can vary greatly, but can be used for learning and practising new skills and techniques, developing inner strengths and resources, setting goals, exploring obstacles and experimenting with new ways of relating to yourself and others. At times you may also be encouraged to do some out of session work in order to build on any work we do in session.
  • Will the session be confidential?
I always maintain the highest standards of privacy and confidentiality, adhering to the British Psychological Society code of conduct and am GDPR compliant. Confidentiality would only be broken for the purposes of protecting the client or someone else from harm or abuse: If this were to happen, I would be open and always inform you first.
  • Do you accept Private Health Insurance?
I am registered with several leading private health insurers including Aviva, Vitality Health and AXA-PPP. It is recommended you check with your insurance provider for authorisation of payment prior to embarking on a course of treatment. Please also remember health insurance providers often require you to obtain authorisation before commencing therapy and excess charges may be incurred depending upon your policy.
  • How long does a session last?
The initial session will last 60 minutes. A typical therapy session will last 50 minutes which gives me some time to write notes and plan for our next session. In some forms of therapy such as EMDR, 90-minute sessions have been shown to be more effecitve when processing disturbing previous life events. We would discuss this together beforhand if relevant.
  • How much does a session cost?
I offer a free 15–20-minute telephone consultation session to introduce myself, outline my approach, hear a brief description of the problem and answer any questions you may have. If you decide to proceed to treatment, then sessions will be charged at £80 per session. To book a session, please see my Bookings Page.
  • How accessible is your clinic?
My clinic is on the first floor of the Mind Body Sprit Centre and there is no lift access. I am therefore unable to cater for wheelchair users at this location. However, I would be happy to source a more suitable location if required and would try my best to ensure no disability prevented you from accessing treatment with me. The centre is located on a small trading estate with plenty of free dedicated parking. Please click for directions.
  • I live outside of the UK, can I still access therapy with you?"
As long as you speak English and are comfortable with engaging in the therapy process using online video calling software then I am happy to work with clients outside of the UK.
